چکیده

Natural gas pipeline systems give merchants the ability to trade natural gas across time and geographical markets. That is, these systems embed two types of assets that merchants manage as real options: storage and transport. The current literature has studied the merchant management of these assets in isolation. In contrast, we consider their joint merchant management, which we model as a Markov decision problem (MDP). Due to the intractability of computing an optimal policy of this MDP, we leverage our structural analysis of this model and extend a least squares Monte Carlo method to obtain a heuristic policy, also computing lower and upper bounds on the value of the assets. This heuristic policy performs near optimally on realistic instances. We use this policy and instances to investigate (i) the benefit of the joint merchant management of storage and transport assets; (ii) how to nearly optimally simplify this management; (iii) the value due to price uncertainty and the performance of a reoptimization-based heuristic available in commercial software designed to capture this value, and ways to simplify this approach; and (iv) the value of transport trading across different pipelines. Our research has potential relevance beyond the specific application.

Tradeoff between Storage and Transport in Merchant Energy Trading on a Network

The operations of merchant energy trading in wholesale markets across different locations and current and future dates can be represented as a network where storage and transport trades compete for the capacity of storage and transport assets. We study the tradeoff between storage and transport trading for a network with a single storage asset and multiple transport assets, a realistic situatio...

Merchant Commodity Storage and Term-Structure Model Error

Merchants operations involves valuing and hedging the cash flows of commodity and energy conversion assets as real options based on stochastic models that inevitably embed model error. In this paper we quantify how empirically calibrated model errors about the futures price term structure affect the valuation and hedging of commodity storage assets, specifically the storage of natural gas, an i...

Approximate Dynamic Programming for Commodity and Energy Merchant Operations

We study the merchant operations of commodity and energy conversion assets. Examples of such assets include natural gas pipelines systems, commodity swing options, and power plants. Merchant operations involves managing these assets as real options on commodity and energy prices with the objective of maximizing the market value of these assets. The economic relevance of natural gas conversion a...

Real Options and Merchant Operations of Energy and Other Commodities

The value chain for energy and other commodities entails physical conversions through refineries, power plants, storage facilities, and transportation and other capital-intensive infrastructure. When the operation of such commodity conversion assets occurs alongside liquid markets for the input and output commodities, the operating flexibility of conversion assets can be managed as real options...

Optimal Commodity Trading with a Capacitated Storage Asset

This paper considers the so called warehouse problem with both space and injection/withdrawal capacity limits. This is a foundational problem in the merchant management of assets for the storage of commodities, such as energy sources and natural resources. When the commodity spot price evolves according to an exogenous Markov process, this work shows that the optimal inventory trading policy of...
